I just don't understand why going to bed at night is so dramatic for Emily. But she really likes to be held or rocked until she falls asleep. It hasn't really been a problem while she and Katie have been living here, but they will be moving into their new place Sunday, so we won't be able to "tag-team" her at bedtime. So this week we decided to try to be Supernannies and get her into a bedtime routine. We have "established a bedtime routine" that includes reading books and saying prayers. After that we turn off the light and sit nearby while she cries (I mean falls asleep). And cries, and cries, and cries (aka, falls asleep). Every night we are supposed to sit closer to the door until finally we are able to just put her in bed and she will just go to sleep.
Here's where the drama comes in. And I'm not sure who is more upset by it; Emily, Katie, or me. The first night, she cried and called roll (I want Mama, Daddy, Gage, Maw Maw, Nanny, Grandy, Grace, Rae-Rae--and anyone else she has ever met). And she fussed for an hour and a half. Last night was more successful (thank you Supernanny). She only fussed for about 10 or 15 minutes. But when Katie went to bed, she started again. I was proud of Katie for sticking with it because listening to her cry is so hard, especially at Mommy's bedtime. But Katie did stick with it and Emily fussed another 15 or 20 minutes before she decided that we just weren't going to give in.
Score--2 for the adults; 0 for Emily.
She's going to her Daddy's house this weekend, but we are planning to start in again Sunday night when she gets back. She'll probably be in her new house by then, but hopefully we've started something that won't be too hard to keep up.
